Overview
IQ Engineers were contracted by Northumbrian Water to remove existing penstocks, supply, and install a Weir Penstock. This upgrade formed part of the client’s ongoing improvements to their treatment process, aimed at enhancing long-term operational efficiency and reliability.
Scope of works for the client
- The removal of two existing penstocks
- Preparation and repair of existing mounting surfaces
- Installation of 2 No. 239mm x 450mm weir penstocks
- Fixing using through bolts and chemical anchors
- Alignment, levelling, and shimming to ensure correct installation
- Grouting and finishing of installed units
- Final clean down and handover
Process and timeline
- Preparation: Site induction completed, permits signed, and confined space checks carried out prior to entry.
- Installation: Existing penstocks removed and wall surface was repaired due to damage as seen in photographs
- New penstocks positioned, levelled, and secured using appropriate fixings
Units aligned, shimmed, and grouted into position
- Completion: Process repeated for second unit, followed by final inspection, clean down, and sign-off
- Duration: All works completed safely within a 3-day programme
Conclusion
The project was delivered on time and in line with Northumbrian Water requirements, with both penstocks installed to the required operational and safety standards.
By carefully preparing the existing structure and applying appropriate fixing methods, IQ Engineers ensured a secure, reliable, and long-lasting installation with minimal disruption to the site.
